Lesson: Jump Rope for 2nd Grade
Ryan E. Smith
Content:
Students will learn the proper way of jumping rope.
Students will jump rope three times consecutively without stopping
Students will demonstrate non-locomotor and locomotor skills together.
M.MS.02.01
M.MS.02.02
Teacher will use a video recording device to tape each student individually to provide feedback.
Pedagogy:
ITIP 1 and ITIP 2
ITIP 1: Students will be given a step by step progressive breakdown of the skill
ITIP 2: Students will participate and use the skill by attempting the skill step by step
Students have difficulty putting the different parts of jumping rope together, so the step by step breakdown will allow the students to progress at their own pace.
Jumping Rope:
1) Elbows at side, feet together
2) Swing arms
3) Timing/jump
4) Repeat consecutively
Step by step breakdown of skill being taught
1) Step 1: Students will practice arm motion and catch the jump rope with their feet. Catch with toes, pull out the back and repeat
2) Step 2: Students will practice “timing”-students will use arm motion and practice when they are supposed to jump. Student will step through the rope one foot at a time when it passes in front of their face.
3) Step 3: Students will practice “jumping”- Students will use arm motion and jump one time when they reach the “timing point” learned in step 2. Student will use two footed vertical jump one time to jump through the rope.
4) Step 4: Students will attempt multiple jumps in a row.
Students will practice the skill on their own and will be videotaped individually and the teacher will quickly replay the recording for each student to breakdown their progressions.
Content and Pedagogy:
These strategies allow the students to learn a skill that involves multiple locomotive skills and non-locomotive skills and to practice the skill in a broken down step by step process. Each student will have their own personal space in the gym with their own rope and they can practice on their own and progress from step to step, first together as a class, then they can go back to any step they need to improve upon.
Technology:
I will be using a video recording system in this lesson. This technology is not absolutely necessary to achieve my objective, but it is a great teaching tool to show students their progress. This technology is a great teaching tool for any skill of physical education, to allow students to see themselves and what their bodies are doing is great and allows them to further understand what they are doing well and what they need to improve.
Technology and Pedagogy:
This technology is a great tool to use with my chosen teaching strategy of a step by step breakdown of the skill. This will allow students to see what their bodies are doing at specific moments and movements of the skill.
Technology and Content:
This technology allows for behaviorism and adaptation learning of my students. They can see what they are doing individually and also see others who are performing the skill the proper way and they can learn from this.
Assessment:
Students will be assessed on a scale of the broken down skill. Students will be assessed by their ability to perform the key concepts of the skill…arm motion, timing, jumping, jumping consecutive times. This technology can be used to record when testing and show the students their strengths and weaknesses and see areas of improvement they may need.

Lesson Plan Reflection
Ryan E. Smith
I am an elementary physical education teacher and for my lesson that I implemented, I taught jump rope to a second grade class by using a step by step process breaking the skill down into three key elements. Using these three steps, the students learned using behaviorism and conditioning, namely, operant conditioning. I used a video recording system to record each student individually during the lesson and quickly played it back to each one, so that they could see what their bodies were doing, what they were doing right, and what part of the skill they needed to improve and how they could change and adapt.
My students sit in “squads,” so I had each squad come to one end of the gym to be recorded individually while the rest of the class was practicing the three steps. Step one is “arm circle,” the students will stand with both feet on the ground and practice the arm movement of using object manipulation, and catch the rope with their toes and then pulling it out the back by lifting their heels. Step two is “timing,” students will use the arm motion and practice when to jump by waiting to see the rope pass in front of their face and stepping one foot at a time through the rope. Step three is actual “jumping,” students will use a two footed vertical jump to try to complete the skill one time while implementing the first two steps.
By using the video recording system, the students were first able to see the proper way to approach each skill then they could watch themselves and what their bodies were doing. This is a great tool that helps supplement the curriculum already in place. The use of this technology only enhances the students learning and allows for different learning styles from each student to be accommodated. Constraints to using this technology is time, it is difficult to spend the appropriate amount of time with each student when I only see each class once a week for 50 minutes, so the assessments with the students were quicker than I would have liked. Overall, I like using this sort of lesson and can use it for many different skills in my classroom, the gym.
